INTERVIEW: Meet Jai

JAI is an urban R&B singer/songwriter from Ottawa, Canada. Dark pianos, heavy 808s, and eerie strings set the mood for his ominous world. From his early days on Preston, he's been no stranger to the inner-city hustle. A low profile, quick moves and the grind make up the bulk of his day-to-day life. Although not glamorous at times, it’s what’s shaped him to what he is today: a rebellious outcast. JAI’s in his own lane and is unfazed by society’s views or perceptions of him, no matter where this story goes. With his OfTheRise crew by his side, JAI will always remember two things: where he came from, and why he’s doing this.

We had the chance to catch up with Jai to talk about his inspirations and upcoming plans regarding music.

Which artists inspire you the most?  The Beatles were dope, not only on the stage but off it as well. I grew up listening to a lot of Michael Jackson too; he's definitely someone I draw inspiration from. In terms of more modern musicians, guys like Tory Lanez and ASAP Rocky are pretty dope and inspirational.

What genre would you put your music in? My music has a unique flair to it, so I'm not sure which genre I'd put it in exactly. I heard someone call it Grunge R&B, maybe something like that, although Contemporary R&B is one that comes up too.

When did you start making music? I started singing and messing around with music pretty young, maybe like 11 years old. I use to sing and put my little brother to sleep when we were growing up. It was never something I thought I'd do seriously, really it was something I did for fun. It wasn't until 2016 where I started to make it my craft. Certain events that brought me in front of the mic took place and now we're here.

Is there an upcoming E.P or album coming up? There is a tape coming out soon. I can't say too much about it, but it's coming sooner than you think.

Where can fans find you? Fans can find me on Instagram, SoundCloud, Twitter and Facebook at @JAIoftheRise, on on Snapchat @jayu3.

Also what was your favorite album of 2017 and why? I think Rhapsody's Laila's Wisdom was pretty hot, so were Miguel's and Kendrick's albums. Laila's Wisdom was hands down my favorite though.
